On our bike trip for Mae Hong Son Loop, we happened to be in Chiang Dao on the right day – Yes, on Tuesday to experience the famous Chiang Dao Tuesday Market. As we asked the owner of our guest house (Doo Dao Daoi Farm Stay A very nice place next to Chiang Dao Hot Springs – Click here to book at Booking.com) what else to explore, he suggested a visit to the morning weekly local market.
Chiang Dao Tuesday Market has an authentic local flavour and not at all touristy. With stands on both sides of the main road of Chiang Dao town, you will find shops selling everything – garments, spices, vegetables, fruits, meat, pickles and what not. Crowded with locals walking through the market, you will get a very authentic flavour of Thai culture in this market. This market is also called as the 1001 meter market of Chiang Dao with shops over a length of almost 500 meters on both sides of the road.
Market was crowded and it was not easy to drive our scooter around, so we parked our scooter at the bus stop just next to market and left on foot to explore. Though some of the people (as per their posts) happened to meet people from local hill tribes in this market but we were not so lucky. Still we loved our walk through this morning market – a very unique and memorable experience.

Here are the pictures of the market which will give you first hand flavour of this local Chiang Dao Market.
It was a very naive and authentic experience for us. It took us around 2 hours to take a walk through the market. We bought 2 pairs of goggles and sunflower seeds for us. Do bargain well for the best price but do not haggle 🙂 Usually second price quoted by Thai people is also their best price. To get the best deal, you may inquire across shops and then purchase from the one offering the best price.
Every Tuesday – 6 AM to 12 noon. However we left from the market around noon and it still was very much busy and abuzz, so we are sure that market extends much beyond its noon timings.
