Underground Shiva Temple in Hampi: Walk through Water

Underground Shiva Temple (Also known as Prasanna Virupaksha Temple) is one of the oldest in Hampi Temples dating back to 14th Century. This temple is unique as it is located a few meters below the ground level and roof of the temple is at current ground level. Another uniqueness comes from the factor that sanctum of the temple remains submerged in water through out the year and one has to walk almost 20 meters through 2 feet water to reach to the room with Lord Shiva statue.

Shiva Temple compound is very well maintained with a lot of greenery. Children and families were having good time for their outing here. You will find the temple gate just after walking a few meters from entry gate.

As soon as you get down the stairs, you enter into the pillared corridor of the temple which lead to Main Garbhagriha. Corridor is filled with water and one has to walk through the water to reach the Garbhagriha where main Shivalinga is located. We could not take the pictures inside as ground was uneven and we have to be cautious walking through water. Also, it was pitch dark inside and people were moving in line with the help of mobile torches.

Water level remains high during monsoon and it gets really difficult to walk inside dark chambers. So exercise caution if you visit Hampi in monsoon.

Area around the temple too has many ruins from the past. This area is relatively much better maintained as compared to other Hampi sites. Also, being far from the main temple, this place has relatively lesser crowd.
