Cycling in Bangalore: Hesaraghatta Lake

We were excited on our first cycling ride in Bangalore. We had planned to leave early but could not get up on time 🙂 and finally left from our home in Subramanyanagar (Malleshwaram) at 7:30 in morning for Hesaraghatta Lake.

We had no clue about the route and based our path search completely on GPS and guidance from locals. Initial 4 KMs, cycling in Banagalore city, turned up to be really painful as we moved on Yeshwantpur Road (NH4) amid traffic chaos and vehicle smoke. Thankfully, It turned peaceful as we took a devour for route to Hesaraghatta Lake. Onwards then, we were on calm road off busy highway with clean and cool air and cycled ~25 KMs to reach the lake.

Once out of city limits, we were completely enjoying our ride cruising ahead on the highway. We stopped a few times to take break, catch our breath and also to have our breakfast.

Taking Break on the way

After cycling for good number of hours, we reached Hesaraghatta lake at around 11 AM. There were only few people and some locals at the lake.

Beauty of Hesaraghatta Lake

A couple was having wedding photo shoot, a group of boys was chilling out near pumphouse and a family was sitting down on the side of the lake.

We went down at Hesaraghatta lake after crossing a small bridge and took a cycling ride on trail around the lake. It was all calm and peaceful as there was no one around but few birds.

It was getting sunny and we were tired, so found a small tree under which we parked our cycles and took rest for some time before heading back to home.

We tried to go on other side of the lake by riding all along but then realized that water was extending back to a great length and dropped the idea. Locals guided us to a nearby road coming out of Animal Husbandry department and we took the same to take our route back to Bangalore.

Cycling back to Bangalore

On our way back from Hesaraghatta Lake, we took a different route to avoid traffic and smoke and it turned out to be a good decision as we found big government farms (Chickoo, papaya, tomatoes, red chilies, grapes) on our way.

We had left from Hesaraghatta Lake around 1 PM and reached home at around 4 PM. We were completely exhausted but thrilled with our expedition. Happy cycling, guys. Do reach out to us for any information on your cycling ride.

Quick Checklist for your cycling ride to Hesaraghatta Lake

  1. Route: Our return route was much better as we avoided traffic snarls and pollution. Learning is that you should not choose the smallest route but choose the greenest one 🙂
  2. Eateries: There are limited eateries on the way once you are out of city limits (which you would want as soon as possible), so carry some fruits or food with you.
  3. Leave Early:We were delayed by almost 2 hours to begin our ride. Leave early so that you can avoid both sunlight as well as traffic on the way. Best would have been to leave around 5:30 AM.
